Canasta

Collect matching ranks, build melds, and turn seven cards into a canasta. The discard pile, wild cards, and partnership timing make every round tactical.

Basics

Four players form two teams. Use two 52-card decks plus four jokers, for 108 cards. Deal 11 cards each.

On each turn, draw from the stock or legally take the entire discard pile, meld if desired, then discard one card. The first team to 5,000 points wins the match.

Goal: build melds of equal ranks, complete at least one seven-card canasta, and go out.

Melds and canastas

A meld contains at least three cards of one rank. Twos and jokers are wild, but a meld needs at least two natural cards and may contain no more than three wild cards.

Seven or more cards form a canasta. A pure canasta has no wild cards and scores a 500-point bonus; a mixed canasta scores 300.

The discard pile and going out

Taking the discard pile means taking all of it, and its top card must immediately enter a legal meld. A frozen pile requires two matching natural cards from your hand.

Your team must have a canasta before you go out. You may ask your partner “May I go out?” Their answer is binding.

Strategy

Keep useful natural pairs, avoid feeding opponents' open melds, and do not spend wild cards too quickly.

Read your partner through legal plays and discards; talking about cards in hand is not allowed.

Five clever tips

Nothing up your sleeve—just legal moves that make everyone wonder when you got so sharp.

1

Protect natural pairs

Two matching natural cards can unlock a frozen discard pile.

2

Use black threes defensively

A black three blocks the next player from taking the discard pile.

3

Count wild cards

Knowing how many twos and jokers remain helps you judge whether a pure canasta is realistic.

4

Watch every discard

An opponent's repeated safe discards reveal which ranks they are avoiding.

5

Time the question

Ask your partner if you may go out only when you can finish immediately.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used?

108: two complete decks with two jokers each.

Can I take only the top discard?

No. A legal pickup takes the entire pile.

Do we need a canasta to go out?

Yes, the team must complete at least one canasta first.
